Black Box

The Black Box is an Arts venue in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, hosting up to 500 events each year. As part of their outreach programme, the organisation has developed the Black Moon project, which supports people with a disability of all ages, taking place in the Black Box and off site. The Foundation funded the organisation in 2013 for their Black Crescent Moon Club and in 2018 they received £4,630 towards their Black Moon Summer Academy.

The summer school project supported up to 20 young people between 12-18yrs with a learning difficulty, to learn skills in DJ-ing, event management and marketing. This helped improve the confidence of the young people by creating opportunities to meet and make new friends during the scheme, develop new skills and also enable their family and carers to create informal networks of shared knowledge and experience. The project culminated in a musical showcase event, which highlighted the achievements of the young people who took part.

Sarah Jones the director of Black Box commented, 'The Black Box is delighted to be supported by Halifax Foundation NI for the Black Moon Summer DJ Academy. The academy provides an opportunity to gain an OCN level 1 in DJ-ing, as well as event management training which will help the young people learn how to put on their own events. The support from the Foundation has meant that we have been able to reach young people with learning disabilities from across Northern Ireland to upskill them in DJ and event management skills, improving their confidence as well as providing them with a live platform to perform to the general public. Without the support of the Foundation this programme would not have happened.'
