Livingstonia Hospital Partnership

A baby benefits from oxygen

£4,370 to provide 3 oxygen concentrators and 3 oximeters to the David Gordon Memorial Hospital in Malawi.

The Livingstonia Hospital Partnership exist to help support the David Gordon Memorial Hospital (DGMH) in Livingstonia, Malawi.  DGMH is run by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian and it serves a community of 60,000 people providing hospital and outpatient services in a rural environment where there are no primary healthcare services.

Patients who are severely ill or who have respiratory problems often require or benefit from breathing oxygen enriched air.  Through fundraising, Livingstonia Hospital Partnership were able to supply 3 x Invacare Platinum 9 oxygen concentrators which are portable machines which concentrate the oxygen supply in air.  These had been placed in theatre, maternity and pediatric wards, but the male and female wards did not have any oxygen concentrators and in paediatrics, especially at times when malaria infection is at its highest, one machine is having to be used for many patients.  The grant then was to provide 3 further Oxygen concentrators for the hospital.

The oxygen concentrators were purchased and delivered and put into the paediatric and male wards and into the maternity unit.  The grant also provided 6 pulse oximeters to measure patient’s oxygen saturation, to ensure the correct use of the concentrators.  Staff on each ward were trained on how to use the equipment.
