Northern Ireland Rural Women's Network

Northern Ireland Rurals Women’s Network were awarded a grant through the foundations Special Initiatives Programme.  The programme is reserved for applications that have a strategic focus and with a Northern Ireland wide benefit.

NIRWN are part of a Women's Regional Consortium, working to ensure regional support for women in disadvantaged and rural areas. They work in partnership with a range of community, voluntary and statutory organisations to ensure that the voice of rural women is strong, and to advance rural women's activities.

NIRWN have a responsibility not just to canvas views and consult, but to support rural women to tackle these barriers and issues. In recognition that as an organisation, NIRWN do not have the capacity to support each rural woman/women’s group to lobby on the keys areas and how they manifest locally for them, they devised this project to provide strategic support and a working research and lobbying document.  They will link rural women to decision makers, share lobbying tools, familiarise them with the structure of local and regional government and produce a report that can be used by rural women to support them to address their own issues.

The ‘Rural Voices’ project from NIRWN was awarded £3,450 towards support for identified areas of concern by their membership through hosting 6 sessions  The issues identified were: Caring Responsibilities; Rural Transport; Rural Development; Education & Training of women; Rural Women, Poverty & the Economy; Social Isolation, Health & Well-being. 72 rural women engaged directly with a panel of decision makers and topic experts to explore practical solutions, policy levers and methods to influence change.  The findings of these sessions has been written up and published and the report shared with the women's regional consortium and across the rural sector.
