International Grant Case Studies

Fields of Life is an interdenominational, cross-community development charity. It is their vision to see real change occur in the lives of whole communities in East Africa through holistic and sustainable development which empowers people living in extreme poverty and helps them to help themselves, restoring their dignity and providing hope for their future. They are committed to collaborating with local communities in East Africa to bring about positive change through the provisions of quality education, clean water, health promotion and other community based initiatives.

In January 2014 Livability started an employment programme with the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC), its partner in Nepal. The project, which received a grant of £6,000 from the Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland, aims to support patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) to become financially independent when they return to their communities after receiving rehabilitation services at SIRC.
Adults with SCI face barriers to employment with a global unemployment rate of more than 60% and people with SCI are 2 – 5 times more likely to die prematurely.

£4,370 to provide 3 oxygen concentrators and 3 oximeters to the David Gordon Memorial Hospital in Malawi.
The Livingstonia Hospital Partnership exist to help support the David Gordon Memorial Hospital (DGMH) in Livingstonia, Malawi. DGMH is run by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian and it serves a community of 60,000 people providing hospital and outpatient services in a rural environment where there are no primary healthcare services.

War on Want was awarded £12,457 to deliver three irrigation projects in Malawi.
Background
War on Want NI is an autonomous International Development NGO whose mission is to alleviate poverty by working in partnership with poor communities in Africa and by challenging the systems that keep them poor. They work in 3 Sub-Saharan countries, working in partnership with 39 local NGOs and community based organisations in Uganda, Malawi and Tanzania. War on Want raises much of its funds through the sale of second hand goods in its 13 shops across Northern Ireland.
